So, I went out on a limb today…I formally submitted my proposal to present at Ignite Boise 02 on July 16th! If you’re not familiar with the Ignite format, it’s 20 slides in 5 minutes that auto-rotate every 15 seconds. So…get to the point! Ignite Boise 01 was a huge success and after watching Jess Flynn’s “Leave My Ring Finger and Uterus Alone!” I decided to take the plunge.

So, here’s my proposal entitled “Life Sucks. Now, Move On!”:
A humorous glimpse into a series of life events, such as, becoming a mom before I could drive, graduating college before I could buy my first Natty Light, and other funny slants on major events in my life that have given rise to my personal philosophy: Life Sucks. Now, Move On. Whether it’s the loss of a job, a crappy diagnosis, or the opportunity of a lifetime – get over yourself and make your move.

In 5 minutes I will share the shitty, the stupid, the amazing, the unfinished and perpetually changing life I have come to accept and call my own. Mind you, I have yet to be selected (I just sent it in like 30 minutes ago) but I have hope folks! It would be an entertaining if not self-deprecating damn good time.

So, let me know what you think of the proposal and hey if you know anyone on the jury…eh hmmm…maybe you could put in a good word? (SMILE)

Today, I received this email from Norm Semanko, Idaho Republican Chairman:

Subject: Minnick Votes for “Hate Crimes” Bill

Dear Friends,
Last week, Idaho’s First District Congressman, Democrat Walt Minnick voted for the dangerous “Hate Crimes Prevention” bill which grants special privileges to homosexual and transgendered lifestyles. Over time, this bill will make principled opposition to the homosexual agenda a criminal offense.

This vote is consistent with Minnick’s liberal past — like the time he gave money to defeat Idaho’s Marriage Amendment campaign in 2006. By the way, Idaho’s Marriage amendment passed with 63% of Idahoans voting in favor of it.

Perhaps it shouldn’t surprise us that Walt voted with Nancy Pelosi, Janet Napolitano and Barney Frank to provide these special protections – and he abandoned the seventeen common sense, fair-minded members of his own party that voted against the bill such as Heath Shuler, Travis Childers and Joe Donnelly.

It seems to me that Minnick doesn’t share Idaho’s values after all.

Norm Semanko, Chairman

Mr. Semanko – I am an Idahoan. I moved here from the Midwest where the hills are green, the corn stalks are monstrous, and the cities flourish in rich cultural diversity. I didn’t move here to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. I didn’t move here to escape crime. I moved here because this state is one of hope. This beautiful state has provided a lot of hope for my family and I. And in that regard, I must question your intent with this email.

I must ask you: where is the link to the bill you reference as the “Hate Crimes Prevention” bill? I managed to dig it up for you. H.R. 1913 cited as ‘Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009‘ serves to enact many things. One of which is to define the very meaning of “hate crime”:

SEC. 2. DEFINITION OF HATE CRIME.
In this Act–
(1) the term `crime of violence’ has the meaning given that term in section 16, title 18, United States Code;
(2) the term `hate crime’ has the meaning given such term in section 280003(a) of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994 (28 U.S.C. 994 note); and
(3) the term `local’ means a county, city, town, township, parish, village, or other general purpose political subdivision of a State.

In a nutshell – it hasn’t changed anything within our U.S. Code other than to define what the term “local” means. The rest of this very short House Resolution, which passed the House of Representatives on April 28th and is now on its way to the Senate, has explicitly more to do with providing funding to local government to aid in the investigation of hate crimes than it has to do with the expansion of “special privileges to homosexual and transgendered” persons as your email suggests. Although, it does provide grant funding for additional resources in the investigation of hate crimes that are…

motivated by prejudice based on the actual or perceived race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability of the victim, or is a violation of the State, local, or tribal hate crime laws.

What’s bad about providing additional funding to our local law enforcement bodies? At the very core of this bill that’s what it provides. It is not setting some perch from which you or I can claim some kind of moral high ground. And it most certainly isn’t poising itself to become the next Proposition 8 which your email also eludes too with the statement…

Idaho’s Marriage amendment passed with 63% of Idahoans voting in favor of it.

Simply put, this bill is attempting to provide our local law enforcement officials with the funding they require to vigorously investigate and bring to justice the perpetrators of prejudice in our society. All prejudices, not just convenient scape goats.

So, then is this email more about rallying support for ousting conservative-leaning Congressman Walt Minnick? It would appear to me that at the core of your email that’s what you’re attempting to accomplish. For whom? Bill Sali? I think that elephant has stomped its way out of the circus act.

You failed to mention that Minnick, in addition to the left leaning Democrats you noted above, voted for H.R. 1913 alongside many from your own party. To note: Judy Biggert of Illinois, Mary Bono-Mack of California, Joseph Cao of Louisiana, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Mike Castle of Delaware, Mike Coffman of Colorado, Charlie Dent of Pennsylvania, Lincoln Diaz-Balart of Florida, Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Rodney Frelinghuysen of New Jersey, Jim Gerlach of Pennsylvania, Mark Kirk of Illinois, Leonard Lance of New Jersey, Frank LoBiondo of New Jersey, Todd Platts of Pennsylvania, Dave Reichert of Washington, Illeana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, and Greg Walden of Oregon. All of whom seem to share the same disease devoid of “common sense” and fair-mindedness.

I urge you to step outside and see the tide that is rising behind you. Idahoans may not be ready for same sex marriage or fair treatment for same sex couples, but I can’t imagine they’d go for popping granny off her scooter on Main Street and getting away with it either.

I have struggled for many years to wrangle my ADHD tendencies and start a business. I, like many others, get mired in the details. Where do I start first? How do I talk to people about my ideas? How much information do I share and with whom do I share it? Should I start with a mini-business plan or go for the full monty? How do I present the idea to a potential investor (video? PowerPoint? word doc?) and how much detail and images do I put it in it? Should I start talking to customers before they’re even customers? And my big one – What if someone steals my idea?

There is no shortage of questions that I’m sure are going through your mind too. Some of us have even staked our ingenuity and bright ideas on the welfare of our own families. It’s scary business here folks. And if there ever was a time to do it – it would have to be now, right? Have the stars officially aligned? Or are our ideas doomed… Read More »

I’m looking for feedback from my relatively small, but incredibly intelligent and savvy peeps on making the switch to biofuel.

What things are most important to you as a consumer in deciding whether or not to make the switch to biofuel if I told you:

1. It’d be cheaper than today’s avg gasoline and diesel prices. Not by a lot, but still cheaper.
2. That the fuel I’m referring to would be recycled vegetable oil from US based restaurants and other outlets (not from plants grown specifically for this purpose).

What types of information would you need to make this consideration? For example, would you want to know exactly where the vegetable oil came from? Would you want to know what the reduction in your carbon footprint would look like if you made the switch? Would you want to know how to make the switch and what’s involved?

Are there people you follow in this industry or sites that you visit that are rich in eco-friendly discussions and information?

If you have opinions on this topic or just relevant resources for information, I want to hear from you! Do tell!

I have a good friend, Karen Sautter, from Massachusetts who is a very active Young Republican and the primary author of RedHeadRepublican.com. In her spare time between her doctoral studies, her two part-time (ehh hmmm full-time) jobs, her republican activism, her impending election to her local school committee, and her post in the current YRNF administration, she has authored this humorous video about the state of politics as she see’s them.  Aptly named “Monday Morning Granola”, this video describes how Karen and seemingly numerous other young republicans feel about the stimulus package and how it impacts our future.

I share this with you today not because I’m an advocate for or against the stimulus package or because I believe or endorse the contents of the video but I very much enjoy Karen’s humorous approach to the state of political affairs and thought you might too. I’d love to know what you think of the video and what you think or feel about the stimulus package. Enjoy!

Last week, Sprint started running their most recent ad campaign targeting millions of iPhone and Blackberry toting bandwidth hogs. In thier latest spot, Sprint sets the stage for the first cell carrier to offer service on a 4G network. With highlights ranging from most searched phrases such as “Dog” specifically “Labrador” and tweeting Twitters this spot makes my “Spot On” Hit List. Kudo’s to Sprint for finally finding a way to connect with existing and potential consumers by speaking our language. It’s not that I didn’t like the “CEO” spots, but this makes me think Sprint is actually getting into the game and finally connecting with consumers on their level with services that actually meet their needs.

Spot on Sprint…Spot on.

Watch the spot for yourself:

I’ve encountered several clients who are interested in cultivating video blogs for their businesses. There are several companies that do this but not a lot of them that do it well. For one, it would seem that all SEO value of a video blog would be lost. That is unless you alt mark it up – which at that point, wouldn’t it make sense to just type it out?

I’m looking for your feedback here – it seems to me that the desire to blog via video comes off a bit lazy and that it’s a latch onto a seemingly “cool” way to blog. Those are my two cents…what are yours?
